TRIP TO BLUFF RIVER CAVE, AL By Bill Walker On June 22, 2002, a group of cavers traveled to TAG for a fun weekend of caving. The Roberts Family, Chrissy Jett, Carla Beals, and Bill Walker left from Gainesville after work and arrived at the TAG House in Alabama at 2:30am. The TAG House is a house owned and maintained by a group of cavers. We all slept on the back porch under the stars. After breakfast with the other TAG cavers, we traveled to Bluff River Cave. It is a large stream passage cave with some neat formations near the end of the cave. After leaving the cave, we headed back for the vehicles, but overshot the road and got lost higher up on the mountain. Carla, a new caver, was walking a little higher up the ridge with Chrissy when she said, "I think I found a hole." Chrissy yelled down to the rest of us that Carla had found a new cave and we all started running up the mountain. Sean jumped in and looked down the pit. "Whoa! This is incredible! The formations are incredible!" The short pit opened up on the top wall of a HEAVILY decorated room, 20 feet above the floor. We rigged the short drop and checked out the cave. Sean even took a QuickTime 360 of the cave (see below.) The Roberts went back into Bluff River to finish shooting photos and Chrissy, Carla and I packed up and went to Gourdneck, a wet stream cave. We had a fun trip as you can tell by our smiles in the pics below. Afterwards, we all met back in Scottsboro for dinner and asked all the TAG cavers about Carla's new find. "You GPSed it, right?" they asked. None of them knew anything about it, though. Later Jerry Reeves showed up and knew exactly what cave we were talking about.
